Meet other people living in Camden and the surrounding areas by becoming part of our close community. As a member of Abbey Community Centre’s Social and Wellbeing Activities Programme, you come as you are. We find that the personalities, interests and skills of our community are as varied as Camden itself and always love to welcome new members.
In an age when social ties have weakened because of the demands of modern life, our activities satisfy a thirst for connections and provide neighbourly support. We have groups for all ages, groups specifically for those aged 50+, and groups just for men. Most allow you to attend whenever you fancy though we do run courses too, with partners from adult education providers such as Westminster Kingsway College and Camden Adult Learning. All activities are free or very low cost and all you need to do to attend is become a member of the Abbey through a quick registration process. This is also free.
Please get in touch if you have a disability or would like to attend with a support worker and would like to talk about your access needs. The centre and all its rooms are fully wheelchair accessible and we have a disabled bathroom.
“Being able to join in this Colouring Calm class is a great hour of quiet focus. Wonderful, I’m so grateful.’”
So, what’s on offer?
One of our slogans has always been Socialise, Energise, Get Wise! and our activities and groups are going to help you do at least one of those! From Creative Writing to Table Tennis, Debt Advice to Sewing, and our unique Re-cycle-art group, there’s something for everyone. Most activities take place weekly and some are term time only. We also occasionally run one-off events, trips and socials for members. Please see our Activities Programme Guide for further information, and our current timetable for days and times plus the contact for each activity.
“The workshops impact on my view of poetry massively. From having no interest to now looking for the hidden meanings in every line, which makes it so interesting.”
What about Covid-19?
Our activities were running over Zoom during periods of lockdown, and currently we are running a combination of in-person, Zoom and hybrid groups. The majority now have an option to attend in person. If you do come along to the centre we ask you to book your place with the relevant staff member (see timetable) and follow our health and safety guidelines.
“During the pandemic I developed neck and muscle pain which felt like it was never going to get better. Jane turned that around for me with her enjoyable exercises and positive manner, with every class I noticed I improved little by little.”
How can I join?
Just email firstname.lastname@example.org and ask to register. You’ll fill in a short joining form and then you’re good to go! You can also pick up a form by dropping by the centre, or call us on 020 7624 8378 if you have any questions about the Activities Programme. We look forward to welcoming you soon!
