A pop up cafe putting community and positive change at its heart
Established in 2017, our cafe is open every Saturday 11am-2pm at the centre with a warm welcome and delicious, affordable vegetarian home cooked food for £2 or less.
Do you ever wonder what happens to those wonky carrots the supermarket doesn’t want? Those packages that get a little bit damaged? Well more often than not they are headed to a land fill despite being absolutely perfect still. By working with the wonderful Felix Project who coordinate with supermarkets, bakeries and restaurants to supply places like us with surplus food, Abbey’s rescues this food and puts it to better use. We stop fresh food, end-of-line products and misshapen veggies going to land fill and instead create healthy, home cooked meals here in the community.
A typical menu
Starter: Smokey aubergine dip with pitta chips & crudites (£1.50)
Main: Mushroom and thyme pie with potatoes, roasted carrots and greens (£2)
Dessert: Apple crumble & ice-cream (£1)
Plus jacket potatoes, toast, cakes, tea and coffee, fruit, milkshakes and more. All at these very low prices. Weekly specials (starter, main and pudding) are served from 12pm until 1.30pm – but get here early to make sure you don’t miss out!
And it’s not just food… We aim to provide a warm, welcoming community hub every Saturday, where people of all ages and backgrounds can come and hang out, meet new people, enjoy performances and take part in activities.
1st Saturday of the month: Saturday trips with Neighbours2Friends - see the sights around London as part of a friendly group! Depart from Abbey at 2pm to a different attraction each month.
3rd Saturday of the month: Open Mic, compered by Hassan. Share your music, poetry, comedy or anything else, as long as it’s family friendly! Sign up for a slot at email@example.com. 6 slots every month, performances start at 12.30pm.
4th Saturday of the month: Music, raffle and recipe-sharing! We have a bit of a party every 4th Saturday with music from our fabulous friends the Elderly Brothers. Take part in our raffle and see what you can win! This is also our Foods of the World Saturday, where our weekly specials cover recipes from different cultures, and you can take home your own recipe to try at home.
Every Saturday: Tech Buddies drop-in support session, 10am – 12pm. If you’re aged 60+, get help with your phone, laptop or iPad from one of our lovely volunteers.
Colouring for kids: Got the family with you? Check out our kids colouring table where we have plenty of fresh colouring sheets and pens to keep the little ones (& sometimes the big ones!) entertained.
Occasional Saturdays: We have the odd special event on too, such as Restart Parties with the brilliant Restart Project, and all sorts of performances and workshops with community groups. Look at our latest newsletter to see what else is coming up.
Volunteering at Abbey’s Community Cafe
If you’re aged 18+ and have a bit of time to spare, we would love to have you on board as a volunteer at the cafe. There are all sorts of ways to help and shifts available. We just ask you to commit to 12 shifts over the course as a minimum (so that could be once a month, or more often if you fancy it!) You can find out more about some of our volunteer roles by clicking on the links below:
If you would like to apply please contact us on firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll send you an application form.
How do we do it?
Our cafe is made possible by funding from the People’s Health Trust and the Team London Volunteering Fund.
The best way to support our cafe is by coming along – so get yourself down here and have a lovely meal with us.
